Aligned versions of the L18e gene cluster found in various archaeal genomes. Organisms containing a particular arrangement are indicated. In this figure and subsequent figures, genes are shown as boxes with a pointed end that indicates relative transcription direction but not gene length. Each box is labeled with its gene name except the r-protein genes, which are labeled to indicate their gene product. The non-universal archaeal r-protein genes are colored in pink and all other genes are shown in cyan. The thin arrows connect immediately adjoining genes and serve as alignment gaps. Blank spaces indicate the absence of a gene, e.g., rpoK in this figure, from the cluster but not necessarily the genome. These conventions are followed in all the subsequent figures.
