Dr. Helen Alice Bean
Dr. Bean died on Feb. 8, 2009, at the age of 86 in Vancouver, BC. She graduated from the University of Manitoba in 1943, specializing in radiation oncology. She served in the Canadian Army during World War II, with the rank of Captain from January 1945 to April 1946 when she returned to reserve status. She was an extremely accomplished woman who worked as a radiation oncologist, researcher and educator. She began her professional practice at the Allan Blair Memorial Cancer Clinic in Regina, Sask., in 1946 and served there until 1972. She moved to Toronto in 1972 and joined the medical staff at the Princess Margaret Hospital with a cross appointment to the University of Toronto, School of Medicine. In addition to her professional accomplishments, Dr. Bean was a dedicated mother to her 3 children. She is survived by a daughter Carol (Bean) Gibson, her spouse Byran and son Thomas; a daughter Barbara (Bean) Ledger, her daughter Robin, her son Andrew and his spouse Stella; a son Robert, his spouse Barbara and daughter Una.
Dr. Norman Miller Brown
Dr. Brown died on May 18, 2009, at the age of 93 in North York, Ont. He graduated from McGill University in 1940, specializing in radiation oncology.
Dr. Frederick George (Ted) Elliott
Dr. Elliott died on May 5, 2009, at the age of 57 in Calgary, Alta. He earned his medical degree from the University of Alberta in 1975. He completed his urology residency at the University of Alberta and was admitted to the FRCSC in 1981. He then completed a fellowship in urological oncology in Indianapolis in 1982. He has practised in Calgary ever since — first at the Foothills Medical Centre and subsequently at the Rockyview General Hospital. He was passionate about the practice of medicine and was admired and respected by colleagues and patients alike. He derived great pleasure from helping his children with their homework, coaching, refereeing and watching countless hockey games, and just being with his family. He and his wife, Bev, had begun to discover the joys of travelling together. They enjoyed live theatre and loved spending time hiking and being with nature. He is survived by his wife Bev, to whom he was married for 26 years and by his children, Kevin, Graham and Megan; by his siblings, Elizabeth (Chuck) Cook, Davis (Debbie) Elliott, Josie (Gordon) Woodman and Nancy (Hilliard) MacBeth; as well as several nieces and nephews.
Dr. Hjalmar Wilfred Johnson
Dr. Johnson died on May 13, 2009, at the age of 78 in Vancouver, BC. He graduated from the University of Manitoba in 1956, specializing in urology. He is survived by his wife Lorna, daughters Lynn and Karen (Jim), son Jeff and 2 grandsons.
Dr. Joseph E. Tremblay
Dr. Tremblay died on Mar. 19, 2009, at the age of 81 in Westport, Ont. He graduated from the University of Laval in 1954, specializing in urology.
