Cancer.Net: A New Name for ASCO's Patient Information Website

PMCID: PMC2793993  PMID: 29447554

The American Society of Clinical Oncology's (ASCO) patient information Web site, formerly People Living With Cancer (PLWC), is now Cancer.Net and can be found at www.cancer.net. Cancer.Net brings ASCO's expertise and resources to people living with cancer and those who care for and care about them. All the information and content on Cancer.Net was developed and approved by practicing oncologists and members of ASCO, making Cancer.Net the most up-to-date and trusted resource for cancer information on the Internet. Cancer.Net is made possible by the ASCO Cancer Foundation which provides support for cutting-edge cancer research, education, and patient information. Some of the cancer care and treatment information that can still be found on the Cancer.Net site include:

  • Detailed guides on more than 120 cancer types and cancer-related syndromes

  • Information on clinical trials, coping, managing adverse effects, caregiving, and survivorship

  • Patient guides adapted from ASCO's Clinical Practice Guidelines

  • Expanded prevention section

  • Feature articles and patient-centric podcasts

  • Spanish language materials

Looking for new patient-friendly information? Stop by ASCO's patient information booth at the 2008 ASCO Annual Meeting, May 30 to June 3 in Chicago, Illinois, to learn about ASCO's latest resources.

At the booth, attendees can view the site and order promotional items and a supply of materials to share with their patients. In addition, a special Cancer Advances newsletter will be available Sunday, June 1, that summarizes research highlighted at the meeting and explains what this research means for patients.

Also, encourage your patients to visit www.cancer.net during and after the Annual Meeting to hear special Cancer.Net Podcasts explaining the new research presented at the meeting.

Expanded Fact Sheet Series Includes 20 Cancer Types.

ASCO's fact sheet series gives patients, and their family and friends, a basic introduction to major cancer types. Each fact sheet includes an overview of the cancer type, an illustration of where the cancer starts, how it is treated, terms to know, and questions to ask the physician. ASCO's patient information booth will feature several new titles at the 2008 Annual Meeting:

  • Brain tumor

  • Breast cancer

  • Cervical cancer

  • Lung cancer

  • Non-Hodgkin's lymphoma

  • Melanoma

  • Multiple myeloma

  • Oral and oropharyngeal cancer

  • Thyroid cancer

  • Uterine cancer

PDF copies of the fact sheets are available online at www.cancer.net/factsheets. You can also request free printed copies for your waiting room or patient education area by calling the ASCO Communications and Patient Information Department at 703-519-2927.
