The authors overlooked a recent publication by Santarlasci et al. (Eur. J. Immunol. 2009. 39: 207–215). That study showed that TGFβ was not essential for the development of Th17 cells from naive human CD161+CD4+ cells from umbilical cord blood, but the cytokine favored the expansion of Th17 cells due in part to its suppressive effect on Th1 cell development. The authors apologize for this unintentional oversight.
