The experimental set-up. Predatory mites of two different species were released either 23 h prior to the start of the experiment on the resident patch (R), which was supplied with ample pollen as food, or 1 h prior to the start of the experiment on the invader patch (I nv), without pollen. No mites were released on the ample pollen patch (P), or the empty, no-pollen patches (E). All patches had a small piece of thread, which the mites used for oviposition
