GP principal South Woodham Ferrers, near Cheltenham, 1967-92 (b London 1927; q University College London 1950; FRCOG), died from heart failure on 1 May 2003.

Sylvia was a registrar in obstetrics and gynaecology in Nottingham and London and assistant county medical officer in Essex before becoming a GP principal. Her previous experience in obstetrics and gynaecology was put to good use and she played a major role in the development of both clinical and academic needs within the department at St John's Hospital, Chelmsford, where she worked as a hospital practitioner. Sylvia was the first female doctor in the United Kingdom to complete the advanced hyperbaric medicine course and was an enthusiastic scuba diver. She leaves three children and five grandchildren.
