The key to ensuring that our College policies and programs are in sync with member needs is having members themselves lead the way in developing and implementing them. We are fortunate to have more than 1000 members currently involved in National or Chapter College committees.

The National College Board comprises an Executive Committee of 7 members, including the College President; 22 directors elected by our Chapters; directors appointed by the chairs of the academic departments of family medicine, the sections of teachers, researchers, residents, medical students, and family physicians with special interests or focused practices; and 3 public board members. About 40 committees, working groups, and task forces report to the Board, each made up of members from across the country.

Committee chairs are appointed by the Board of Directors to serve 3-year terms, renewable once. Committee members are selected by the committee chairs in consultation with College senior staff. Members inform us of their areas of interest at the time of annual membership renewal or can contact us at any time to request consideration for committee appointments. In addition to the National College committees, there are also many opportunities for members to become involved in Chapter committees.

Over the years, feedback from members who have served on committees has been overwhelmingly positive, with frequent comments about how rewarding it is to play a key role in addressing issues vital to family doctors and their patients and to have the opportunity to broaden one’s horizons and develop lifelong friendships with colleagues from across Canada.

The 2010 to 2011 slate of committee chairs will be announced at our annual meetings during Family Medicine Forum, taking place from October 14 to 16 in Vancouver, BC. The table (page 963) outlines the 2009 to 2010 College Board committees and chairs.

We thank all those who have led or served on these committees and encourage each of you to let us know if you are interested in becoming involved; contact Sarah Scott at sscott@cfpc.ca.
