The HSS Journal has reached its seventh year. We continue to see an increasing number of submitted manuscripts from all the subspecialties within musculoskeletal medicine. In this issue, we begin with a selection of articles addressing topics in perioperative care. The problem of perioperative management of sleep apnea is reviewed with thoughtful recommendations for recognition and post-surgical planning in these patients. The success of an accelerated physical therapy protocol and a new clinical pathway designed to reduce length of stay following total knee arthroplasty are explored. Two provocative reviews update awareness of the diagnostic opportunities that may arise during ultrasound-guided anesthetic procedures and of the perioperative care of patients with collagen vascular disease. Several manuscripts on a variety of topics related to the shoulder are presented. The risk factors that may contribute to thromboembolic complications following spinal surgery are explored by Kim and are compared to the experience of lower-extremity total joint arthroplasty. The intermediate-term outcomes of Achilles tendon allograft reconstruction of the ACL and a case series of unicompartmental knee arthroplasties are also presented.
We are pleased by the success of the HSS Journal to attract excellent manuscripts and articles of special interest. The larger number of submissions that we are now receiving has encouraged us to expand our publication schedule. Beginning with Volume 7, the HSS Journal will now be published with three issues per year. We hope to continue to provide an opportunity for authors to publish their work which advances the field of musculoskeletal medicine.
