This report covers the period of 1 June 2009–31 May 2010. Overall, the society is in outstanding financial health, in large part due to the continued success of Molecular Biology and Evolution. Journal revenue has increased from 2008. Society membership decreased significantly, with membership-only subscriptions down from 442 in 2008 to 264 in 2009. Society membership + journal subscriptions also decreased (308, down from 468 in 2008).
The society used its income to publish Molecular Biology and Evolution and support its annual meeting, in 2009 held in Iowa City. This included providing graduate and postdoctoral travel awards, funding the Walter Fitch Prize Symposium (a cash prize for the winner and travel funds for 8 contestants), running the Undergraduate Diversity Mentoring Program, supporting the travel/accommodation of Council members, and providing travel incentives for Associate Editors of MBE. This year also saw the successful launch of our new journal, Genome Biology and Evolution.
