where logit[P(Yij = 1| X, Z, μ0j)] was the log odds that student i in school j smoked or drank and assumed that conditional on X, Z, and μ0j, Yij to Ynj were independent; j = 1… Jk was the number of schools in our sample; Xiβ was a vector of individual-level covariates (e.g., race, family SES); Zij λ was a vector of school-level covariates (e.g., medium segregation) and cross-level interactions (e.g., Black × medium segregation); and μ0j was a random effect representing unobserved heterogeneity for school j and was assumed to be randomly and normally distributed with mean 0.
