THE ADVENT OF WARM weather, particularly within the last three days, has brought the subject of the public health vividly before the minds of those who take any deep interest in such matters, (as who ought not?) As a general thing, we believe, Brooklyn is on all hands considered a remarkably healthy place. Its peninsular situation, and the hilly nature of the ground, both contribute to make it healthy….
Still in the most healthy localities, the hot season will generally produce a great deal of sickness. At this period of the year, the evil humors of the system, the seeds of poison that have been planted there by indiscretion, ignorance, or gluttony, are apt to work their way out. Men pay up old scores. Nature shows them that her laws are not to be infringed with impunity.
Although at present, the health of the city is uncommonly good for the time of year, it may not be useless to give a hint or two, which will serve to promote that important necessary of happiness. Health is a great blessing, every body says; and yet, when opposed to the gratification of their appetites, the gaining of a little more money, or to some temporary whim, there are very few men and women who practically seem to regard it as of value.
Of course the best means of keeping one's health, is to avoid the causes which lead to sickness. When the folly is committed, however, and the consequences come, there is no other way than to make the best of it. Abstain from taking medicine to the very last. Think on the plain, common sense requirements of your case, and rigidly persevere in that course of temperance, exercise and a due regard to the body's well being, which your judgment tells you is necessary.
Public bathing is a great preservative of public health. Immersion in the water as often as once every other day, is absolute necessary to comfort, during weather as hot as some days of the past week. If our Corporation were wise, they would have free baths at the expense of the city. The cost would be paid back to them in two years, in the lessened expenses of almost every department of municipal charity….
