Women but not men get equal access to healthcare jobs

PMCID: PMC314488

Women have more access to healthcare occupations traditionally dominated by men, but men fail to enter occupations traditionally dominated by women. Grant and colleagues (p 141) analysed data from the New Zealand census for 1971 and 2001, to examine the impact of the introduction of equal opportunities legislation on workers aged 19-44. They found that in 1971 there were 10 male dominated occupations, which are now balanced for the sexes, whereas most of the 13 occupations that used to be female dominated continue to be so.
