Former consultant paediatrician Eastbourne and Hastings (b 1928; q King's College Hospital, London, 1951; FRCP Ed), died on 18 February 2003 following a heart attack.
Figure 1.

By the age of 13 John had lost both parents through illness, but with help from his father's employers and his godparents he gained a scholarship to Christ's Hospital School, where a love of music began. He was appointed consultant in 1971 and retired in 1988, free to continue his pursuit of classical music and opera and becoming cheerfully overweight and hypertensive. He spent repeated holidays in Austria and Mauritius to revisit old friends, and perhaps to compensate for bachelor life in a small flat.
