
Joseph Leung, MBBS,, MD., FRCP., FACP., MACG., FASGE., FHKCP., FHKAM
Dr. Joseph Leung is currently the Mr. & Mrs. C.W. Law Professor of Medicine at the University of California, Davis School of Medicine and the Chief of Gastroenterology for the VA Northern California Health Care System. He has a broad range of credentials: Fellow, Royal Colleges of Physicians of Edinburgh, Glasgow and London; Fellow, Hong Kong College of Physicians and Hong Kong Academy of Medicine; Fellow and Master, American College of Physicians, Fellow and Master Endoscopist, American Society for Gastrointestinal Endoscopy. He graduated as Bachelor of Medicine and Surgery from the University of Hong Kong in 1975 and completed his medical training at the Queen Mary Hospital, Hong Kong. He did his fellowship training in Gastroenterology with Dr. Peter Cotton at the Middlesex Hospital, London and obtained his Doctor of Medicine degree from the Chinese University of Hong Kong in 1986.
Dr. Leung pioneered a number of therapeutic endoscopic procedures including epinephrine injection for ulcer hemostasis, urgent nasobiliary drainage for acute suppurative cholangitis, the design and development of the Cotton-Leung stent for biliary drainage and palliation of malignant obstructive jaundice. He has conducted bench and clinical studies to determine the cause of biliary stent blockage and its prevention. His current research is focused on the use of mechanical simulator for ERCP training and the role of water method colonoscopy for colorectal cancer screening.
Dr. Leung has been actively involved with the training of GI fellows in different institutions for the past 25 years. He participated in teaching at numerous local, national and international conferences. He pioneered the live teaching ERCP workshops in Asia and the United States and served as course director for 49 workshops including the 1997 ASGE postgraduate course, and as faculty for 59 live teaching courses and delivered over 150 talks as an invited speaker for local, national and international conferences. Dr. Leung is the inventor of the ERCP mechanical simulator (EMS) and artificial papilla, pioneering the use of EMS for practice of basic ERCP procedures by novice endoscopists. He has served on many national and international scientific educational, and research committees. He has extensive endoscopy/ERCP publications including 154 peer-reviewed papers, over 300 abstracts and scholarly publications, 41 book chapters, and edited 4 books.
Dr. Leung received many academic and service awards from different institutions and societies including the American College of Gastroenterology Senior Governor Award in 2004 and Master Award in 2010, and the American Society for Gastrointestinal Endoscopy Master Endoscopist Award in 2005. He was a former Associate Editor for Gastrointestinal Endoscopy and currently one of the Editors-in-Chief for the Journal of Interventional Gastroenterology. He is a reviewer for a number of prestigious journals including the New England Journal of Medicine, Gastroenterology, Endoscopy, Gastrointestinal Endoscopy, Digestive Endoscopy and the American Journal of Gastroenterology.
