Former consultant surgeon York District Hospital (b 1934; q St Bartholomew's Hospital, London, 1958), d 6 June 2003.
Appointed in York first as a general surgeon and later as a urologist, Brian was a nationally recognised researcher into bladder cancer. He was few people's idea of a typical consultant: he dabbled in self sufficiency, making methane out of “slurry” and bringing an industrial windmill to his garden for “free” electricity, and also drove a tiny moped with knees under chin in York's notorious traffic. When Parkinson's disease forced him to give up medicine and later the clarinet, he became the “fixer” for the York concerts of the British Music Society and the Guildhall Orchestra.
