CANADA'S CHIEF VETERINARY OFFICER RECEIVES HEAD OF PUBLIC SERVICE AWARD

PMCID: PMC339187

Congratulations are in order for Dr. Brian Evans, Canada's Chief Veterinarian, who was presented with the Head of Public Service Award in a December 2001 ceremony for his work at the Canadian Food Inspection Agency.

“I would like to congratulate Dr. Brian Evans who was awarded the Head of the Public Service Award (Excellence in Policy Category). Those of you who have had the pleasure of working with Dr. Evans will agree that this award is fitting. Dr. Evans' commitment, his sound decision making and his communication and cooperation skills combine to make him a highly regarded and valued professional. Among his many accomplishments, Dr. Evans assumed a leadership role in implementing risk management policies and emergency measures to protect Canada from foot and mouth disease. He was also instrumental in suspending the importation of animal products from Brazil. In addition, Dr. Evans has shown his dedication to building strong partnerships with all levels of government and non-government organizations to enhance Canada's emergency preparedness measures,” said Mr. Ronald L. Doering, President of the CFIA.

On receiving the award, Dr. Evans attributed his receiving it to his training as a veterinarian, and to the work of his fellow veterinary colleagues. “The award came as quite a surprise and a significant honor which I feel recognizes again the profile and critical role that veterinary science has attained in contributing to the quality of life of Canadians. The award brings recognition to the veterinary community because it is the collective effort that merits profile and not any one individual,” said Dr. Evans.
