CHANGES AT THE VETERINARY DRUGS DIRECTORATE

Streamlining the Emergency Drug Release and Drug Adverse Reaction Programs

PMCID: PMC339252

Important changes to streamline the Emergency Drug Release (EDR) and Drug Adverse Reaction (DAR) procedures of the Veterinary Drugs Directorate (VDD) came into effect on April 2, 2002. A new direct phone line ensures person-to-person communication with knowledgeable VDD staff. This service will now be available in both official languages.

The telephone and facsimile contact numbers for EDR and DAR are now (613) 948-2381 and (613) 946-1125, respectively. The previous numbers should no longer be used.

Once the VDD has all of the necessary information, EDR requests will be processed by the end of the next business day. A copy of the authorization will be faxed to both the manufacturer and the requesting veterinarian upon approval. Updated forms may be downloaded from the VDD Web site at www.hc-sc.gc.ca/vetdrugs-medsvet/ or by calling the number above.

Feedback in the form of follow-up reports must be provided by the prescribing veterinarian. The VDD relies on collaboration from veterinarians, pet owners, and pharmaceutical companies in the monitoring of marketed veterinary products. To allow the Directorate to better assess potential or emerging safety issues, it is vitally important to promptly report all suspected adverse drug reactions.

Your comments or suggestions are welcome. Please provide your feedback electronically via the VDD Web site, call the new phone numbers mentioned above, or contact Dr. Ian Alexander, Chief, Clinical Evaluation Division, at (613) 957-3859.
