5. a — Acute enterotoxigenic colibacillosis usually occurs in calves under 5 d of age and rarely later. The onset is very rapid, and previously healthy calves can be in a state of collapse within 24 h. The time of onset is helpful in determining the presumptive diagnosis.

The area of ping is centered too far caudally to be abomasum; volvulus of the omasum does not occur by itself. Volvulus of the jejunoileum results in several smaller areas of ping and one would palpate distended loops of small intestine per rectum. Volvulus of the ascending colon is rare unless accompanied by cecal volvulus.
