ANIMAL HEALTH WEEK PLANNING TIP #2

PMCID: PMC340195

Animal Party: It might sound more like a movie title than a feasible AHW event, but arranging a get-together in your community for animal owners and their 4-legged (even beaked) friends can be a lot of fun! Securing a location for your animal party shouldn't be too difficult. As long as animal owners are conscientious about chaperoning and cleaning up after their pets, a local park would be an ideal locale. Contact your municipality for details.

To create a celebratory mood, “party hosts” can wear AHW T-shirts, bandanas, and other accessories in red and gold (AHW colors). Fire up the BBQ for some hot dogs and hamburgers, provide treats for the animals, add some games, and be sure to offer prizes for game winners. Animal Health Week promotional items make great giveaways!

Why not invite a local celebrity to judge your best trick, longest tail, or dog singing contest? You can also invove the community by asking the police department to give police dog demonstrations or have animal trainers demonstrate basic behavior training exercises on site. Local farmers might welcome the opportunity to set up a petting zoo or offer pony rides to children. Just remember to err on the side of safety and above all, ENJOY!
