New ototopical fights canine otitis externa

Canada's first canine ototopical containing a fluoroquinolone for the treatment of otitis externa — Baytril® Otic — is now available to Canadian veterinarians.

Baytril Otic, from Bayer Animal Health, is the only product of its class available in a drop formulation, making it easy for pet owners to treat stubborn and painful canine otitis externa. Baytril Otic is effective against Pseudomonas spp., a particularly persistent otitis pathogen. And unlike other treatments, it contains no corticosteroids.

Now Baytril Otic takes Baytril's performance to new heights by combining the well-known antibacterial strength of enrofloxacin with the antimicrobial and antimycotic features of silver sulfadiazine. This broad-spectrum combination is effective against the bacterial and fungal organisms most commonly found in otitis externa. Silver sulfadiazine helps to reduce inflammation and aids in faster healing of damaged skin in the affected ears. And because Baytril Otic does not contain any steroids, veterinarians have the flexibility of individualizing their steroid regimen depending on the case.

Nuflor® approved for footrot application in Canada

Nuflor, manufactured by Schering-Plough Animal Health, and one of Canada's most widely used injectable therapies for bovine respiratory disease, has been approved by Health Canada for the treatment of footrot, giving Canadian cattle producers and veterinarians a new powerful antibiotic solution to tackle the disease.

“What makes Nuflor so distinctly different from other antibacterials used in animal health is that it contains florfenicol,” states Dr. Norm Machell, veterinary services manager, Western Canada, Schering-Plough Animal Health. “Florfenicol, which is chemically similar to chloramphenicol, is a novel, broad-spectrum antibiotic compound that goes to work rapidly and lasts for a sustained period of time.”

Nuflor is, in fact, remarkably fast-acting, reaching therapeutic levels in the bloodstream within 30 minutes of application. Nuflor is also very versatile; veterinarians have the choice of prescribing it subcutaneously or intramuscularly. Dosages for the treatment of footrot are the same as when Nuflor is used for bovine respiratory disease.

Bandage protection for dogs

Sophisticated Dog Wear's Bandage Covers offers a solution to foot bandages that get wet and dirty, and often do not stay on. The Bandage Covers have been developed, in cooperation with experienced veterinarians, to be easy to put on and stay on.

All the shoes are made from a special lightweight, waterproof textile that “breathes,” so as not to trap moisture or condensation inside the shoe. The ribbed outer sole makes them nonslip and very durable. Shoes come in 4 sizes. Also available, are nonbandage, lined or unlined models that protect the feet from the elements and the dog's own chewing, as frequently occurs when allergies are a problem.
