The new president of the American Association of Colleges of Pharmacy (AACP) is J. Lyle Bootman, Senior Vice President for Health Sciences and Dean for the University of Arizona College of Pharmacy. He received a bachelor of science in pharmacy degree from the University of Arizona and a master of science and doctor of philosophy degree from the University of Minnesota. He also completed a residency at the National Institutes of Health. He is a professor of pharmacy, medicine, and public health, and a fellow of several professional associations including the American Pharmacists Association, American Association of Pharmaceutical Scientists, and the American College of Apothecaries.

Lyle has been a leader in the area of pharmacoeconomics and health outcomes, and his work regarding the outcomes of drug-related morbidity and mortality is recognized worldwide. He has almost 300 publications including the textbook Principles of Pharmacoeconomics, which is used in more than 40 countries and translated into 7 languages. Additionally, he is an elected member of the Institute of Medicine (IOM) of the National Academies, where he served on the Board of Health Care Services for 7 years, and was co-chair of the IOM committee that released the highly publicized report, “Preventing Medication Errors.”

Lyle has received numerous honors and awards. He was the recipient of the George F. Archambault Award, the Latiolais Honor Medal, and the Hugo H. Schaefer Award, and in 2008 he was recognized with the Joseph P. Remington Honor Medal, the highest honor given by the profession of pharmacy to recognize distinguished service and lifetime contributions.

He is described by colleagues as a consummate idea person, a big thinker with big ideas. He is a visionary who is always seeking creative new approaches and trying to anticipate the trends of the future. He is well known and highly respected across disciplines and professions, but is most passionate about the profession of pharmacy. His vision is infectious and it rallies and inspires others. Lyle is interested and curious about everything. He can tell you the history of Disneyland, the best restaurant in just about any city in the world, and then launch into a robust discussion about genomics.

As President of AACP, Lyle’s overarching goal will be to assist the academy in creating value in all dimensions of research, education, and practice. He wishes to put the academy front and center to national and local policy makers, private sector decision-makers, and other health professionals across the spectrum of the academy.

“There has never been a more important time for academic pharmacy to get to all the right tables of influence at the right time,” Lyle says. “We also need to continually think about building and equipping the next generation of leaders with the skills and visibility they need to be game-changers. Our work can make a difference in the shared goal of creating value in healthcare.”

Lyle thanks his entire family for their tremendous lifetime support and credits them for his success. He gives special recognition to his grandchildren Isabella, Madeleine, and Aspen who have brought new found joy and excitement to his life.
