The AMIA President's Award recognizes individuals and groups who have devoted unusual personal effort to the development of the association and the field of medical informatics.
The recipients for 2001 are:
Carol Aronson, Margaret Olah, Judy Privett, and Molly Pruett, in gratitude and acknowledgment for outstanding support of JAMIA during its first decade. As staff at Vanderbilt University Medical Center, Mss. Aronson, Olah, Privett, and Pruett have worked in the day-to-day editorial process of the journal.
Blake Wachter, in appreciation for organizing and managing the efforts of the AMIA student volunteers at the Annual Symposia for the past three years. Mrs. Wachter is currently pursuing her PhD in medical informatics at the Unviersity of Utah and plans to begin medical school this fall, also at the University of Utah.
Charles Safran, MD, in recognition of his vision in the field of medical informatics through chairing the AMIA Meetings Committee, as Annual Symposium Program Chair, and as board member and international leader representing the best interest of AMIA. Dr. Safran is Chief Executive Officer of Clinician Support Technology, an application service provider focused on the creative use of emerging technologies to deliver e-health solutions to improve patient care. He has served on the faculty of Harvard Medical School and as a primary care physician on staff at Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center for 15 years. He is currently Associate Clinical Professor of Medicine at Harvard Medical School.
Milton Corn, MD, for good humor and enthusiastic leadership and for support in advancing research and research training in medical informatics. Dr. Corn is Director of Extramural Programs at the National Library of Medicine.
Helmuth Orthner, PhD, in gratitude for and with acknowledgment of outstanding intellectual leadership and education vision in the field of medical informatics. Dr. Orthner is Professor in the Department of Health Services Administration and Director of the Master of Science in Health Informatics program at the University of Alabama at Birmingham. He also holds appointments as Professor of Computer and Information Sciences, School of Natural Sciences and Mathematics, and as Sr. Scientist in UAB's Comprehensive Cancer Center.
Leadership Group and Members of the Nursing Informatics Working Group, in gratitude for establishing a working group that serves AMIA and the profession, establishing an enduring leadership model for the NIWG, and raising the awareness of AMIA and nursing internationally through the efforts of the NIWG.
