Abstract

This list of 424 books and 77 journals is intended as a selection guide for print literature to be used in a library supporting allied health educational programs or allied health personnel in either an academic or health care setting. Because of the impossibility of covering the large number and wide variety of allied health professions and occupations, the recommended publications are focused primarily on the educational programs listed and recognized by the American Medical Association and other accrediting bodies. Books and journals are categorized by subject; the book list is followed by an author/editor index, and the subject list of journals by an alphabetical title listing. Items suggested for initial purchase (167 books and 31 journals) are indicated by asterisks. To purchase the entire collection of books and journals (2000 subscriptions) would require an expenditure of about $31,970. The cost of only the asterisked items totals $12,515.

The list of print allied health books and journals that follows has been compiled to serve as a selection guide, but not as a standard. It is primarily geared to academic and health sciences librarians who are not familiar with the literature and who need to acquire publications in the various disciplines that make up the umbrella term “allied health.” Nearly sixteen years have passed since the late Alfred Brandon and I published the first “Selected List of Books and Journals in Allied Health” in the October 1984 issue of the Bulletin of the Medical Library Association [1]. The list has been updated biennially from then to the present version. Our prime target back in 1984 was librarians in junior colleges, whose parent institutions were in the process of setting up allied health programs. We did get much positive feedback from our primary audience, the community college librarians. However, we were really surprised to learn that health sciences librarians had used the allied health lists extensively because this body of literature was still less well known than that of medicine, nursing, or dentistry, and that is true today. In fact, when we began our library careers way back when, health care meant doctor, nurse, or dentist!

During the past few years, I have had inquiries about not including electronic media in the allied health list. Electronic media have not been included because this is a list of books and journals in print format. The work that we have done and are doing represents only one piece of the overall collection development objective—the print book and journal collection. To clarify this matter, we decided to add another word to the title of the article, “Print.” We hope that by doing this, people will understand that our work, interest, and expertise focus on print—and there still seems to be a demand for the printed record. The new title is the “Brandon/Hill Selected List of Print Books and Journals in Allied Health.” Neither have we covered the autonomous professions of chiropractic, dentist, nurse, physician, optometrist, pharmacist, osteopath, and veterinarian. Our scope of content and format has also been defined in the eight previous introductions that precede the book and journal lists. They are cited on the first page at the bottom of this article.

Allied health personnel continue to become increasingly prominent and assertive in the health care field. Accreditation, recertification, licensure, core curricula, and multiskills—to mention just a few—are primary concerns of the allied health professions. There are over 9.8 million health care workers in over 200 different health care careers in the United States. It is one of the largest and fastest-growing industries in the country. By the year 2005, it is expected to increase to over 13.8 million workers. Health care has become a $2-billion-per-day business [2]. That certainly indicates that there are a lot of people out there who need a lot of information. Have we been and are we, as health sciences librarians, effectively providing the information that is needed by this huge segment of the health care industry, allied health? Our track record has not been spectacular. Sixteen years ago there were no guides to consult that dealt specifically with collection development in allied health. In the year 2000, with the exception of our list, no other up-to-date sources exist.

However, the Nursing and Allied Health Resources Task Force on Bibliographic Access for the Allied Health Literature (Medical Library Association) has taken on a bibliometric study of mapping the literature of allied health. So far, I know of eleven professions that have been studied: dental assisting, dental hygiene, diagnostic medical sonography, dietetics, health education, occupational therapy, perfusion, physical therapy, radiologic technology, respiratory therapy, and speech-language pathology. This body of work gives a better understanding of bibliographic access to potential allied health core literature [3–14].

If you are trying to develop an allied health collection and the whole thing appears to be a little hazy, there are two sources that you need to consult—one has been around for a long while with various title changes, the most recent being Health Professions Career and Education Directory 2000–2001 [15]. The next one was new last year, Health Professions Education Standards [16]. Both are published by American Medical Association. The Directory 2000–2001 covers educational programs for fifty-two different health care occupations. It also provides data from seventeen accrediting agencies and describes occupations by work environment, average salaries, and job outlook. The Standards gives educational standards, or essentials for forty-seven programs listed in the Directory. In fact, when we took on the job of organizing the literature of allied health, one of the sources we used heavily was the eleventh edition of the Allied Health Education Directory (title variation), published in 1982 [17]. At that time, it supported only twenty-six educational programs accredited by the American Medical Association. The Journal of Allied Health is an indispensable source for anyone associated with allied health from either a professional or an educational point of view.

As a rule, I have selected books and journals focused specifically on allied health, but if a medical text or journal is an integral part of the literature of an allied health discipline, it has been included. I have put an emphasis on current materials, predominately of U.S. origin, although some Canadian and a few British publications have been included—especially in the journal list. Academic and health sciences librarians, nurses, allied health faculty, and Henry Stickell, my collaborator, have contributed many suggestions that were greatly appreciated. However, the final choices for the books and journals in this list are mine—based upon many years of reviewing health sciences literature and working with Alfred Brandon.

The 2000 book list consists of 424 titles. I have tried to choose the most current books available, because rapidly changing technology has a strong impact on many allied health professions and occupations. I have removed 181 book titles from the 410 that were in the 1998 allied health list—44%. Because of my doing this, older books do not appear in this list, but they may have been included in earlier ones. I am aware that “new” does not necessarily mean “better.” The 77 journals that are included in this list have remained relatively stable over the past two years. It is books that have a tremendous turnover.

A distinct literature for some allied health programs may not exist. For example, educational programs for the physician assistant rely heavily upon books in the basic and behavioral sciences as well as standard medical texts and journals, although a few physician assistant books are beginning to appear on the market. Medical publications can be identified from our list of recommended books and journals for the small medical library [18]. Programs for surgeon's assistant and surgical technologist are supported heavily by the literature of surgery and preoperative nursing; relevant nursing titles can be located in our selected list of nursing publications [19]. All three “Brandon/Hill” lists (allied health, small medical library, and nursing) will continue to be updated between published biennial revisions in A Major Report, a quarterly newsletter put out by Majors Scientific Books that was originally compiled and edited by Alfred Brandon for many years [20].

The bibliographic and price information given here is as accurate as we could obtain at the time of publication, but price increases are likely to occur for many of the books and journals over time. Book prices have been obtained from publishers and book vendors. Because of mergers and takeovers, prices may vary from place to place and may not necessarily represent totally accurate figures. If we dealt with a publisher who used both net pricing and list pricing, we have chosen “list.” For association publications that offer member and nonmember prices, we have used nonmember. Subscription prices are entered at the institutional rate. Based upon the prices quoted, it would cost approximately $31,970 to purchase the entire collection of books and journals for the year 2000. The 424 books cost about $20,700; 77 journal subscriptions for the year 2000 amount to $11,270. The average price per book title is $48.73, and the average price of a subscription for the year 2000 is $146.40.

Items for initial purchase are indicated by asterisks before the titles. To purchase only the asterisked items (167 books and 31 journal subscriptions), the total cost would be approximately $12,515; the books total $8,800 and the year 2000 journal subscriptions, $3,715. Due to the diversity of the subjects in this list, most people will probably not want to purchase all of the publications but instead will use the list selectively for programs pertinent to their particular situations. Table 1 shows the approximate cost for each of the thirty-six subject sections in the book list. Overall total figures and average costs for this list are not as meaningful as those that we compile for the small medical library and for nursing, because it is not likely that all these allied health publications would ever be purchased totally as a collection. The books that are in the 2000 list have all been published—or will be published by the fall of this year. If a new edition is scheduled to be released during the last quarter of the year, it will be cited as the current in-print edition. The books are arranged alphabetically by thirty-six broad subjects.

When a book has more than two authors or editors, the notation “[and others]” has been made after the name of the senior author or editor. In the book list, we have tried to indicate the publisher who is currently distributing the book. Due to takeovers and mergers that occur, the publisher shown on the title page may not always be the current distributor. If books are ordered from a vendor, this situation does not present a problem. In the author/editor index, only the names of the senior persons have been included; coauthors and coeditors have not. If the name of an original author or editor is an initial part of the title, we have included that name in the index. Journals have been arranged by twenty broad subject categories, followed by an alphabetical title list.

The critical role of allied health personnel in the current health care environment is well documented. The demand for highly trained allied health practitioners continues to increase dramatically. As health sciences librarians, we are challenged to provide adequate informational resources to meet the research, educational, and clinical needs of all health care professionals, and that includes allied health. We hope that our list will continue to help health sciences librarians in selecting allied health collections.
