IHPBA Distinguished Service Award and Medallion

Steven Strasberg was born and raised in Toronto, Ontario, Canada, and with the exception of a two-year research fellowship in Boston, was educated and trained in the University of Toronto system. He was recruited to the Washington University in St. Louis in 1992, where he currently serves as the Pruett Professor of Surgery and Section head of HPB and GI Surgery and Professor of Cell Biology & Physiology.

He is an outstanding investigator, with a long interest in the physiology of bile formation and the pathophysiology of gallstone disease, whose laboratory was continually funded for almost three decades, producing many important contributions to the literature and helping to train several current leaders in HPB surgery.

He has been a pioneering HPB and liver transplant surgeon, whose clinical insights have advanced the field in many areas and whose dedication to education have help train a generation of surgeons. He is an outstanding academic leader, whose career has served as a model for young academic surgeons, the author of nearly 250 peer-reviewed journal articles, some of which are among the most highly cited in the HPB field. He has delivered 120 invited lectures around the world, is a current or former member of the executive committees of several national and international organizations, including the IHPBA and was a past president of the AHPBA.

Steven Strasberg has a keen and disciplined intellect whose thought processes have kept his peers on their collegial toes for decades. For his commitment to excellence in clinical work, research and education, for the many achievements that have shaped the field of HPB surgery, and for many years of leadership, he was awarded the IHPBA Distinguished Service Award and Medallion at its World Congress in Paris on the 5^th July 2012.
