Abstract.
We studied the cervical spine radiographically of 72 women between 24 and 78 years of age who had carried wood on their head for a mean of 12 (5–41) years and compared the findings with those of 44 women between 21 and 80 years of age who served as controls. The height of the intervertebral discs and the vertebral bodies was statistically lower among woodbearers. Osteophytes were seen infrequently in pre-menopausal women in the study group, and their presence related to age (P<0.01), short stature (P<0.01), and the number of years working as a woodbearer (P<0.05). The medullary canal was narrow in almost half of the post-menopausal woodbearers and narrower in those with degenerative changes (P<0.01). Listhesis also was more frequent among woodbearers.
Résumé.
Nous avons étudié radiographiquement la colonne vertébrale cervicale de 72 femmes agées de 24 à 78 ans, qui avaient porté du bois sur la tête pendant 12 (5–41) années et avons comparé les conclusions à celles obtenues chez 44 femmes agées de 21 à 80 ans, qui ont servi de groupe contrôle. Les corps vertébraux et les disques intervertébraux chez les femmes porteuses de bois présentaient une hauteur significativement inférieure. Les ostéophytes étaient rares chez les femmes non – ménopausiques. Il y avait une relation entre leur présence et l'âge (P<0.01), la taille (P<0.01) et le nombre d'années de port de charge (P<0.05). Le canal médullaire était étroit chez presque la moitié des porteuses ménopausées et plus fréquent chez les porteuses avec osteoarthrose (P<0,01). Le spondylolisthesis était plus fréquente chez les femmes porteuses.
