New Hospital Pharmacy Practitioner Award 2012/2013: Sponsored by Sandoz Canada Inc. Anna Huisman, BScH, BScPhm, ACPR

Anna Huisman is a Coronary Care and Critical Care pharmacist at William Osler Health System, Brampton Civic Campus. Anna completed a BScH in Life Science at Queen’s University in Kingston (2005). While at Queen’s, she had an opportunity to shadow an intensive care unit pharmacist, which inspired Anna to pursue a career in hospital pharmacy. Anna received her BScPhm from the University of Toronto in 2010 and went on to complete a hospital pharmacy residency at William Osler Health System in 2011.

Anna is an active member of a number of professional organizations, including the Canadian Society of Hospital Pharmacists (CSHP), the Canadian Pharmacists Association, the Ontario Pharmacists’ Association, and the American Society of Health-System Pharmacists. She is currently the Lake Ontario West Chapter Chair in the CSHP Ontario Branch.

Her professional interests include critical care, cardiology, and infectious diseases. Anna is involved in teaching and mentorship, serving as a preceptor for Structured Practical Experience Program (SPEP) students and residents and as a TA in the Professional Practice Course at the Leslie Dan Faculty of Pharmacy, University of Toronto.

New Hospital Pharmacy Practitioner Award 2012/2013: Sponsored by Sandoz Canada Inc: Mayce Al-Sukhni, BScPhm

Mayce Al-Sukhni graduated from the University of Toronto with a Bachelor of Science in Pharmacy in 2007. After completing an internship at the Trillium Health Centre, she went on to explore the world of benefits management, completing a residency in managed care pharmacy at ESI Canada in 2008. Following her residency, Mayce joined the Toronto Western Hospital (University Health Network) as the cardiology pharmacist, providing care to both inpatients and ambulatory patients. Seeking to advance her practice, Mayce returned to the University of Toronto in fall 2011 to pursue her Doctor of Pharmacy degree; she expects to graduate in June 2013.

For years, Mayce has been an active member of the Canadian Society of Hospital Pharmacists (CSHP), contributing to a variety of local, provincial, and national initiatives. Since 2010, she has chaired the Cardiology Pharmacy Specialty Network, and she recently assumed the role of Metro Toronto Chapter Chair in the CSHP Ontario Branch. Mayce has also previously served on committees of the Ontario College of Pharmacists and the Ontario Pharmacists’ Association.

Mayce is passionate about teaching and has been a preceptor for many undergraduate pharmacy students and residents. She is a frequent pharmacist facilitator at the University of Toronto, participating in courses such as Medication Therapy Management, Therapeutics Case Study Seminar, and Professional Practice Laboratory. While at the Toronto Western Hospital, Mayce provided regular didactic teaching to her medical and nursing colleagues, and she was also an instructor of the Professional Practice course for the Pharmacy Technician Bridging Program in Ontario. In addition to her formal educator roles, Mayce volunteers her time as a mentor with the student-run Interprofessional Medical and Allied Groups for Improving Neighbourhood Environment (IMAGINE) Clinic in Toronto and the University of Toronto Pharmacy Mentorship Program.

Mayce is keenly interested in research and has collaborated on a number of investigative projects, ranging from nicotine craving in current and abstinent smokers to health care utilization of injured workers in Ontario. Mayce is also a peer reviewer for the Canadian Pharmacists Journal and the International Journal of Clinical Pharmacy.

Outside of her pharmacy interests, Mayce enjoys reading, pursuing her artwork, and spending time with family and friends.
