Following publication of the article, the authors submitted the following statement:

“We were wrong to suggest that CD45/CD11b flow cytometric stratification of microglia could have been a potential source of error in Capotondo et al. (Proc Natl Acad Sci USA 109: 15018–15023, 2012) and apologize for this. CD45 and CD11b are expressed on a wider subset of cells, but Capotondo et al. had carefully stratified this population using differential expression of CD45/CD11b and MHC class II, combined with immunohistological staining to enable identification of specific microglial populations. This has no impact on the data presented in our publication.”
