AMSSM Sports Medicine Conference in Haiti Advances Athletic Care by Teaching the Teacher
As a part of the AMSSM and the AMSSM Foundation’s humanitarian efforts, 7 society members traveled to Haiti this summer to provide sports medicine education to physicians, medical students, coaches, and first responders.
In partnership with the Haitian Sports Medicine Society, the AMSSM hosted its first Sports Medicine/Sports Trauma and Event Medicine Conference in Port-au-Prince, Haiti, June 29–July 3, 2013. The conference was designed as a “teach the teacher” course, with the goal of advancing the education of professionals in Haiti who care for active people, from the professional athlete to the weekend warrior. The conference was divided into 4 segments: demonstrations of musculoskeletal ultrasound-guided and surgical procedures, an “introduction to sports medicine” course, lectures, and clinical time. Led by Dr Thomas Trojian, chair of the AMSSM’s International and Inter-Organizational Relations Committee, the project was part of an initiative to reach out to sports medicine societies in underserved areas of the world to promote healthy lifestyles and heal people from athletic injuries.
AMSSM Expands Fellows Conference in 2013
Thanks to additional grant support, 2013 was the first year of the expanded AMSSM Fellows Research and Leadership Conference, July 26–28, St Paul, Minnesota. AMSSM member Suzanne Hecht, MD, served as program chair of this conference, which integrated leadership programming into the research-oriented curriculum. Additionally, the conference included a sports trauma and event medicine preconference designed to equip fellows to cover events and be prepared for emergencies on the sideline and during game coverage.

Save the Date! February 3, 2014: Third Annual Charity Golf Tournament
SPTS is pleased to announce that it will once again sponsor a charity golf tournament at the Combined Sections Meeting!
As in the past, this tournament will benefit the American Lake Veterans Golf Course and the Foundation for Physical Therapy. This year, the event will be held at the beautiful TPC Summerlin course. TPC Summerlin’s championship golf course in Las Vegas incorporates traditional golf design with the natural desert terrain of the region. This award-winning Bobby Weed–designed championship golf course is located in the master-planned community of Summerlin in Las Vegas and plays home to the Shriners Hospitals for Children Open. It was also the site of Tiger Woods’s first professional victory, in 1996. TPC Summerlin’s par-72, 7243-yd layout was honored by Golf Digest as “One of America’s Best Golf Courses” and named by Nevada Business Magazine as the “No. 1 private golf course in Nevada” in 2006.
Watch for more information about the tournament soon. For now, save the date for a great day of golf at a world-class course, and get your foursome together!
