Ramkumar HL, Tuo J, Shen DF, Zhang J, Cao X, Chew EY, Chan C-C. Nutrient supplementation with n3 polyunsaturated fatty acids, lutein, and zeaxanthin decrease A2E accumulation and VEGF expression in the retinas of Ccl2/Cx3cr1-deficient mice on Crb1rd8 background. J. Nutr. 2013;143:1129–35.
In the above-mentioned article, the concentrations of lutein, zeaxanthin, EPA, and DHA used in this experiment were incorrect as shown. There were four places where we indicated incorrect dosages of these components in the diet. The corrections given below do not change the conclusions in the paper, because all the observations reported were based on the AREDS2-adjusted formula for mice (Supplemental Table 1).
The corrections, shown in boldface type, are:
In the “Abstract,” “35.1 μmol of zeaxanthin” should be “0.351 μmol of zeaxanthin.”
In the “Materials and Methods” section, under the subheading “Experimental protocol,” the revisions are as follows: “…the experimental diet is identical to the AIN-93G diet with the following modifications: no soybean oil, 1.76 mmol zeaxanthin/kg diet, 17.6 mmol lutein/kg diet, 54.9 mmol EPA/kg diet, and 25.2 mmol DHA/kg diet…” should be “…the experimental diet is identical to the AIN-93G diet with the following modifications: no soybean oil, 2.20 mmol zeaxanthin/kg diet, 11.0 mmol lutein/kg diet, 114 mmol EPA/kg diet, and 52.4 mmol DHA/kg diet…” “The effective daily dose is: 1.76μmol lutein, 35.1 μmol zeaxanthin…” instead should read “1.76 μmol lutein, 0.351 μmol zeaxanthin…” Lastly, “The ratio of EPA:DHA is 2:1,” for clarity, should instead be corrected to read “Like the AREDS2 diet, the ratio of lutein to zeaxanthin is 5:1 and EPA to DHA is 2:1 (which has been corrected in Supplemental Table 2).”
