Steve's clear ability to progress in clinical academia did not interest him and he never felt at home in the hierarchical world of medicine. He eventually found his niche in emergency medicine. Unorthodox at times, he would always go the extra mile, be it counselling a suicidal youth or calmly washing the bloody hair of a shaken pensioner. He was a highly qualified diver and hoped some day to open a diving school. Extraordinary pressures precipitated a rapid descent into depression with Steve finally succumbing to the inner demons that frequently shouted down his better angels. He leaves a partner, Jan.
