Former director of public health Southend-on-Sea (b London 1928; q Durham 1951; DPH, FFCM), died from ischaemic heart disease on 18 December 2003.

After qualifying he was called up for national service in the Royal Air Force and became a squadron leader. He was a general practitioner in Newcastle upon Tyne for four years before entering public health, where he spent the rest of his career. He was a medical officer in Newcastle upon Tyne and a deputy medical officer of health in Reading before being appointed medical officer of health in Southend-on-Sea in 1967. Following various NHS reorganisations he retired as director of public health in 1988. Gil was a powerfully built man. Golf and Portugal were his great passions. He leaves a wife, Jo; four children; and six grandchildren.
