Consultant obstetrician and gynaecologist Ashford Hospital, Middlesex, 1974-95, and University College Hospital 1993-2002 (b Vienna 1937; q St Thomas's Hospital, London, 1962; FRCOG), died from lung cancer on 10 December 2003.

After qualifying and training in obstetrics and gynaecology Peter Saunders was appointed a consultant at Ashford Hospital, Middlesex, in 1974. He wrote three popular guides to pregnancy, childbirth, and women's health, and was an acknowledged expert in the management of the menopause. In 1993 he was appointed consultant/senior lecturer at University College Hospital with specific responsibility for postgraduate education. Peter helped develop a renowned training programme at Ashford. He was a council member, section president, and vice president at the Royal Society of Medicine. He leaves a wife, Stephanie; three sons; and six grandchildren.
