Former consultant rheumatologist Norfolk and Norwich Hospital (b Chelmsford 1927;q Cambridge/the London Hospital 1951; DRCOG, Dip Phys Med, FRCP Ed), died on 5 May 2003 following a stroke.
After house jobs he joined the Royal Air Force for national service. He developed poliomyelitis, which left him partially paralysed. Following his experience of rehabilitation and encouragement, he began a career in rheumatology and rehabilitation. He was appointed as consultant in physical medicine at the Norfolk and Norwich Hospital in 1964, where he planned one of the most modern departments in the country. Despite his locomotor problems, sailing was an abiding interest. Retiring from the NHS in 1991 he worked for the benefits agency of the Department of Social Security. He leaves a wife, Diana; three children; and a granddaughter.
