IMPORTANT NOTICE TO VETERINARIANS — MICROCHIPS FOR COMPANION ANIMALS

Suzanne Lavictoire 1
PMCID: PMC385433

Veterinarians using microchip transponders for the electronic identification of companion animals should be aware of the following important information:

Canadian Kennel Club Registration

At present, the Canadian Kennel Club (CKC) will not register dogs implanted solely with an International Standards Organization (ISO) microchip. The CKC recognizes the Canadian Standard microchip as the only acceptable form of electronic identification for the purposes of purebred registration.

Currently, both ISO and Canadian Standard microchips are being sold and implanted in companion animals in Canada. If you are unsure of the type of product you are using, the CVMA suggests that you contact your supplier or distributor. A list of known microchip suppliers in Canada is provided below for your convenience:

  • AVID Canada (800) 338-1397

  • Eidap (888) 346-8899

  • Microchips4Solutions (877) 738-4384

  • PetNet (800) 463-6738

  • 24PetWatch (866) 597-2424

The CVMA supports the permanent identification of animals and recommends electronic implants using the International Standards Organization (ISO) microchip technology. The transition to the use of ISO microchip technology is important for global mobility outside North America and inevitable for companion animals in Canada. The CVMA is working with other stakeholders towards a full transition.
