Biovet Inc., a biotechnology company that develops, manufactures, and markets innovative diagnostic kits and services for animal health specialists, received its manufacturer's establishment licence from the Canadian Food Inspection Agency (CFIA), the entity responsible for approving and regulating veterinary biological products in Canada. This licence, allocated to laboratories meeting very strict rules for the preparation, production, conservation, packaging, and labelling of veterinary diagnostic kits, will now allow Biovet to manufacture, market, and export kits to international markets.
“In addition to demonstrating our expertise and the quality of our laboratories, this licence will make it easier to obtain United States approval expected this fall from the United States Department of Agriculture (USDA),” stated Daniel Roy, general manager of Biovet. With sales of $8 million, Biovet is ready to tackle the very lucrative North American animal diagnostic market, evaluated at some $300 million US. Only a dozen or so Canadian companies have a manufacturing licence from the USDA.
With a new operations center and last May's acquisition of Laboratoire DVQ, Biovet has become a Quebec leader in the animal diagnostic field. Representing an investment of $2 million, the new center and its laboratories, specialized in serology, biochemistry, and hematology, bacteriology and virology, will make it possible, among other things, to conduct tests on systemic diseases, respiratory diseases, blood profiles, and the detection of GEOs in various grains and foods.
Biovet is located in the Cité de la biotechnologie de Saint-Hyacinthe and employs 75 people, including 16 scientists.
