Schematic representation of the mode of attachment of the diphtheria toxin (A) and Bcl-xL (B) to their target membranes. The figure illustrates the equivalent attachment/anchor function of the TM helix and the R-domain for Bcl-xL and the diphtheria toxin, respectively. The membrane insertion of the T-domain and the N-terminal region of Bcl-xL occur regardless of the attachment to the membrane. The processes addressed in this study are shown as curved red arrows (see text for more).
