This is a very practical guide that would be of great use as a reference in both a small and large animal veterinary clinic, as well as specialty practice, and for those studying veterinary medicine.

This book has 20 chapters, and the table of contents and index are very well-organized and comprehensive. The first two chapters review the essential mathematics and the principles of physics of using radiography. Other topics addressed include radiographic film processing, digital radiography, the use of contrast media and both small animal and large animal radiography positioning and techniques. There are brief, but concise introductions to and explanations of other imaging modalities, such as ultrasound, fluoroscopy, computerized tomography, magnetic resonance imaging, and nuclear medicine (scintigraphy). One chapter is dedicated to radiation protection.

Each chapter begins with a shaded box describing which topics are covered, followed by a second shaded box summarizing all of the key points of the chapter. Major concepts are also highlighted in boxes throughout the chapter. References are provided at the end of each chapter for those who wish to pursue further reading and revision questions are given.

A companion website includes case studies, figures, PowerPoint slides, additional anatomy radiographs, and answers to the end of the questions at the end of each chapter. It should be noted that the website requires Microsoft PowerPoint viewer in order to function. For people or clinics who wish to be paperless, the text is also available as an e-book.

The revision of the mathematics and physics is straightforward and well-written. It uses analogies to explain certain concepts that are easy to understand and relate to. The subsequent chapters review the components of the X-ray tube, the components of an X-ray machine and how X-rays are produced. The information regarding the maintenance of the X-ray tube and care of the machine is useful for everyday practice. These first few chapters are perhaps too detailed for the average veterinarian, veterinary student, or animal health technician, but essential for radiology technicians. However, because the chapters are so well-written and concise, it is easy to read and is easy for veterinarians or veterinary students to find the more pertinent information.

Chapter 13 is invaluable and consists of tables for troubleshooting of film faults; those commonly seen and how to correct them. There is a chapter that provides an excellent summary of the numerous safety protocols to follow, and recommendations with regard to the set up of an X-ray room. Any practice under construction or thinking of redoing their X-ray room should definitely refer to this chapter.

The chapters dedicated to patient positioning for both small and large animals are excellent with step-by-step descriptions and accompanying figures. This book demonstrates the standard positions, as well as the less commonly used positions, but not necessarily described in other textbooks.

Another very useful chapter is the one that reviews contrast radiographs. It offers excellent “step-by-step, how to” descriptions for performing various contrast studies, including doses of the contrast agents, other materials required for the procedures, and patient preparation. The chapter is even organized in such a way that it describes these procedures separately for both male and female patients, which is very practical.

All in all, Practical Veterinary Diagnostic Imaging is an extremely useful reference for the veterinary profession, whether it is for students, veterinary technicians, or practicing veterinarians in general or specialty practice.
