Tony qualified in dentistry after his medical degree because he intended to enter his father's practice. But he soon decided that he had a strong preference for medicine and trained as an anaesthetist. In 1949 he came to Mansfield as a consultant and worked at several hospitals in the area until he retired in 1983. Tony found that he had diabetes when he tested his own urine during his finals exam, but he escaped serious complications until fairly late in life. Eventually he lost both legs and needed a coronary artery bypass. He leaves a wife, Jean, and two children.
