Gareth trained in obstetrics and gynaecology in Coventry for three years, which was interrupted by two years of national service in Egypt. He subsequently decided to make his career as a family doctor and in 1953 he joined a busy practice in Small Heath, Birmingham. He later became senior lecturer in general practice at Birmingham University. A Welsh speaker and an active member of the Welsh community in Birmingham, he was interested in sport. He leaves a wife, Mair; a son; and two grandchildren.
