After a short spell in general practice and as a house surgeon Matt became a medical officer attached to the Royal Engineers. He saw service in France, where he narrowly missed boarding a ship that was later destroyed by German bombers. In 1943 Matt arrived in Leicester, where he was appointed consultant orthopaedic surgeon in 1948. He was the orthopaedic surgeon to Leicester City Football Club from 1946 to 1980, and the same for many years to the Leicester Tigers and the Leicestershire Cricket Club. Despite having severe diabetes, he lived to his 90th year without any serious complications. He leaves a wife, Ricky, and two children.
