William Smellie was born into general practice and after house jobs he joined his father in the practice in Sefton Park, Liverpool, working with him until his death in 1959. He was then joined by his wife and together they ran the practice for the next 25 years, living with their family above the surgery. In 1961 William ran the pilot study for a student health service and became university medical officer a year later. He enjoyed a long and happy retirement in Grantown-on-Spey. He leaves a wife, Janet; three children; and seven grandchildren.
