Peter Sainsbury's seminal investigations of suicide in London resulted in the publication of the first Maudsley Monogram, Suicide in London, which still stands as a classic in the field. Under his stewardship the MRC clinical psychiatry unit in Chichester flourished and became world famous, pioneering research in a range of fields in psychiatry, neurophysiology, and statistical methods. Peter was an adviser to the World Health Organization and reviewed trends in suicides in Europe. He held positions in various bodies, including vice president of the Royal College of Psychiatrists. Peter's only daughter was murdered. He leaves a wife, Ruth, a son, and his grandchildren.
