At juvenile stages, 20αHSD-positive X-zone cells appear as an inner subset of TRβ1-positive cells (red and blue). In males, TRβ1-positive cells regress at puberty, whereas in females, this cell population persists into adulthood. B, Hyperthyroidism induces cellular hypertrophy and expansion of the inner cortex.
