Consultant anaesthetist Edinburgh 1948-77 (b 1912; q Edinburgh 1938; DA, FFARCS), d 6 January 2004.
Born Franz Hoenigsberger, Frank studied chemistry in Munich before coming to Edinburgh to study medicine following Hitler's assumption of power. He held the first anaesthetist post at the Western General Hospital, and he also worked at the Royal Hospital for Sick Children. Although a German national, he served in the Royal Army Medical Corps during the second world war. After the war he joined the Royal Infirmary in Edinburgh, where he remained until retirement. He was the president of the Scottish Society of Anaesthetists in 1974. Frank wrote Following the Roe, which was regarded as one of the most authoritative studies of this reclusive animal. Predeceased by his first wife, Thora, he leaves his second wife, Anne; three children; and six grandchildren.
