This book is the latest incarnation of a text that was first published in 1984. It has been updated to include modern techniques such as minimally invasive surgery, the evolution of critical care as well as modern vascular techniques. It would appeal to a general surgeon in training but could prove a useful aide-mémoire to more senior surgeons. Although this book provides an excellent overview, the detail of subspecialties is limited. It is written principally for the American generalist and, as such, there are certain nuances that do not represent current best UK practice. This book is easy to read with excellent diagrams and photographs. There are suggested reading lists at the end of chapters but detailed references are lacking. Overall, this is a pleasant read with broad interest for the general surgeon.
