Former professor of paediatrics University of Colorado, United States (b 1923; q Cambridge/St Thomas's Hospital, London, 1947), died from muscular wasting on 6 March 2004.

After qualifying and military service Donough specialised in paediatrics in London, where he was involved in the introduction of exchange transfusions for the newborn. Through a Harvard fellowship in 1953 he saw the potential for working in the United States. He moved to Denver in 1957 as assistant professor, before becoming professor in 1964. He retired as emeritus in 1991. In Colorado he founded and headed the Kennedy Stolinsky Center for Metabolic Diseases and the Barbara Davis Center for Childhood Diabetes. One of his many contributions to paediatrics was developing micromethods that made unpleasant venepuncture in small children rarely necessary. He leaves a wife, Madeline; two sons; and two grandchildren.
