AMSSM Releases New Viscosupplementation Scientific Statement
AMSSM has released a new scientific statement that provides guidance for physicians and healthcare professionals who provide care for those patients with knee osteoarthritis. The full report, published ahead of print in the Clinical Journal of Sports Medicine (CJSM) and appearing in the British Journal of Sports Medicine (BJSM), titled AMSSM Scientific Statement Concerning Viscosupplementation Injections for Knee Osteoarthritis Importance for Individual Patient Outcomes, includes the following notable AMSSM recommendations and suggestion:
AMSSM RECOMMENDS viscosupplementation injections for Kellgren and Lawrence (KL) grade II-III knee osteoarthritis in those patients above the age of 60 based on HIGH-quality evidence demonstrating benefit using OMERACT-OARSI Responder Rating but the evidence should be downgraded due to indirectness for those under 60 years of age.
AMSSM SUGGESTS viscosupplementation injections for knee osteoarthritis for those under the age of 60 based on MODERATE-quality evidence due to response of treatment in those over 60.
AMSSM RECOMMENDS clinicians and researchers collect OMERACT-OARSI responder data to track individual response to the viscosupplementation.
Thanks to members Drs Thomas Trojian (AMSSM Past Board of Director), Susan Joy (AMSSM Foundation Board Member), Andrew Concoff, and John Hatzenbuehler along with Whitney Saulsberry, PharmD, and Craig Coleman, PharmD, for serving on the expert writing group for this paper. AMSSM hopes that this information can assist health care professionals as they provide care for patients with osteoarthritis. The full paper will be published in print in the January 2016 issues of CJSM and BJSM. Visit AMSSM.org–Publications tab to view statement.

AMSSM Goes Back to the Future to Celebrate 25 Years of Excellence
On behalf of the 2016 Program Planning Committee, AMSSM invites you to the 25th AMSSM Annual Meeting in Dallas, Texas, April 15-20, 2016. This year marks the 25th anniversary of our organization, and we are thrilled to have many of our Founders involved in this year’s program. Our theme is “Back to the Future,” highlighting the past, present, and future of sports medicine. Who better to kick off the meeting on this topic than 4 original Founders of AMSSM: Drs John Lombardo, Doug McKeag, Lee Rice, and Jim Puffer? AMSSM is excited to have Jeff Tanji, MD, give the Hough Memorial Lecture on leadership and professionalism in sports medicine; Rob Johnson, MD, on 25 years of tendinopathy; Randy Eichner, MD, on thromboembolism in athletes; Stan Herring, MD, on back pain; and Dr Landry in the “What is the Evidence?” session. Do you know of an outstanding mentor or colleague who belongs in the AOSSM Hall of Fame? Applications and details are now available at www.sportsmed.org. Deadline for submissions is January 15, 2016.
Join an AOSSM Committee
Every year, AOSSM accepts new volunteers to serve on its standing committees. These volunteer committees are the essence of AOSSM and provide guidance for Society programs and projects. Those who join committees not only heighten their experience as an AOSSM member, but form ties of fellowship with their colleagues that can last a lifetime. Although requirements and duties vary by committee, volunteers must be able to attend regular committee meetings, which are typically scheduled in conjunction with Specialty Day each spring and the AOSSM Annual Meeting each summer.
All membership categories are eligible to serve on AOSSM Committees. Term of service is a 4-year nonrenewable term. Appointment of volunteers to the Society’s standing committees is made by the Committee on Committees, which meets in the spring of each year. Volunteers will be notified if they have been selected by May 2016. If you are interested in serving on an AOSSM committee, visit www.sportsmed.org to fill-out the online form by February 1, 2016. Questions? Contact Camille Petrick at camille@aossm.org.
