Manuscript Central and JDI Reviewers

Janice Honeyman-Buck 1,
PMCID: PMC4788611

The Journal of Digital Imaging’s success depends on the excellent material submitted by our authors and reviewed by our hard working and selfless reviewers. We are grateful for the loyalty and expertise of both. We have been using Manuscript Central from Scholar One to manage the manuscript submission and review process for about a dozen years, and many of our reviewers who initially registered on the site have moved on or changed their research (and therefore their reviewer) interests. We are making an effort to clean up our database to reflect the current interests of reviewers. We urge everyone to take a few minutes to upgrade his or her profile on Manuscript Central and to add an ORCID ID to validate an account (see below).

We at the Journal of Digital Imaging have not experienced a new threat to peer-reviewed publishing, but many other journals have. Authors can suggest preferred reviewers, some of which are not known to the editorial staff. Sometimes these preferred reviewers are not actual researchers in our field, but instead, they can be paid reviewers, friends of the author with no knowledge of the field, or even the author himself or herself. In our case, these reviewers are rarely used and historically when used, have provided poor reviews. To avoid this issue, we are now requesting that all reviewers include their ORCID IDs to validate their unique identity.

We would encourage all our reviewers to sign up for an ORCID ID, which is a persistent digital identifier that distinguishes you from every other researcher. Many people have similar names, and ORCID ID links you with your research, manuscripts, and grant submissions. In addition, the ORCID ID supports automated linkages between you and your professional information and activities. With the next release of manuscript central, authors will be required to validate their account with an ORCID ID when submitting a manuscript. Creating your ORCID ID is easy and takes only a couple of minutes; just follow the directions on http://orcid.org.

To review and update the information we have on file for you, please go to https://mc.manuscriptcental.com/jdi and log in. In the upper right corner of the screen, you will see your name with a pull-down list. Select E-mail/Name to change your e-mail account, select Address to update your address, and select User ID and Password to update both of these as well as your Specialty/Areas of Expertise, Keywords, and to add your ORCID ID (at the top of the page). You will also be able to alert the editors or dates you are unavailable to review manuscripts.

Please take the time to login to manuscript central and update your information so we can continue to provide our readers with high-quality peer-reviewed articles.
