Ophthalmic pathology has contributed to the comprehensive understanding of various diseases. Since its inception in 1947, the American Ophthalmic Pathology Club has conducted discussions by prominent ophthalmologists. A Treatise on Ocular Tumors by H. Knapp was published almost 150 years ago in 1869 (William Wood & Co, New York). Specialized retinoblastoma treatment has been available in the United States for 100 years, and radiation brachytherapy for uveal melanoma goes back almost 80 years, just to highlight some of the common ophthalmic tumors. Ophthalmic oncology and pathology have now come into their own as a subspecialty in ophthalmology.
It is our belief that a journal on ocular oncology and pathology is long overdue. Too frequently a rejection letter from an editor has read, ‘Despite its high scientific quality, we have decided not to publish your manuscript because of its narrow and specific subject matter.’ With the launch of Ocular Oncology and Pathology, we have a new platform to publish our work, to contribute to the progress of scientific knowledge, and to thereby improve the plight of our patients.
Although ophthalmic pathology is not limited to ophthalmic oncology, these specialties draw together individuals with common interests. Indeed, a number of ophthalmologists are trained in and practice both specialties. It is no coincidence that the Editorial Board represents equal partnership of ophthalmic pathology and ophthalmic oncology. Ocular Oncology and Pathology has already been selected as the official journal of the American Society of Ophthalmic Oncologists and Pathologists.
The journal will be published both in print and online every quarter by S. Karger AG (Basel, Switzerland) and will provide a selection of topical clinical and basic research articles covering the etiology, pathology, diagnostic techniques, imaging features, and advances in medical and surgical treatment of ophthalmic cancers. The focus will be on clinicopathologic correlations, evidence-based clinical studies, and translational science. In addition to original papers, Ocular Oncology and Pathology will feature timely reviews and discussions of controversial topics.
We assure that your research will receive timely, unbiased, and balanced reviews, and we welcome your contributions.
