Former consultant in radiotherapy and oncology Christie Hospital, Manchester, and founder St Ann's Hospices, Heald Green and Bolton (b County Cavan 1918; q Queen's University, Belfast, 1948; OBE, MD, FRCR), died from complications of Parkinson's disease on 16 May 2004.
Moya's early medical work was in Belfast but, in 1950, she joined the Christie Hospital and Holt Radium Institute, remaining there until retirement. Her main clinical interests were cancer of the breast and cervix, on which she published many papers, including co-authorship of the first clinical paper on tamoxifen. Moya was concerned with the later management of her terminally ill patients, and persuaded the bishop of Manchester and others to set up a fund to start a hospice. St Ann's, Heald Green, was opened in 1971 to be followed by St Ann's, Little Hulton, in 1979. She never married.
